SQUID

More than one book, actually. I got rather over-excited by Kraken, The Curious, Exciting, and Slightly Disturbing Science of Squid by Wendy Williams (Abrams, FACT, £12.99 Hb) which lived up to it's title and pushed me further into squiddish territory. I had been previously tempted by China Mieville and now couldn't help but take up his latest offering Kraken, An Anatomy (Pan Books, FICTION, £7.99 pb), a science fiction thriller with a mild mannered heroine called Madge. Followed quickly by a cracking classic, John Wyndham's The Kraken Wakes (Penguin, FICTION, £8.99 pb) a thoroughly enjoyable jolly-hockey-sticks horror story.
